This past year was transformative for many Americans. In fact, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports that 17.7 million surgical and minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures were performed in 2018.
They also noted that Americans underwent nearly 250,000 more aesthetic treatments in 2018, compared to 2017.
So, what other insights did the ASPS share from their annual plastic surgery statistics report?
Continue reading to learn which procedures topped the list, and the body contouring trends you need to know about.
Top 5 Plastic Surgery Procedures of 2018
In 2018, three of the five top plastic surgery procedures were body-focused.
- Breast augmentation remained in the number 1 position, with a 4 percent increase since 2017.
- Liposuction ranked second, and over 258,000 surgical fat reduction treatments were performed in 2018.
- Nose-reshaping and eyelid surgery earned the 3rd and 4th positions, respectively.
- Tummy-tuck rounded out the top 5, with over 130,000 abdominoplasties in 2018.
Body Contouring Trends
These findings suggest that, despite an increasing number of non-invasive alternatives, Americans continue to seek surgical body-contouring procedures.
In fact, interest in these treatments is actually on the rise.
Out of the top five surgical and top five minimally-invasive treatments, liposuction experienced the greatest growth, with a five percent increase from 2017.
Why Does Liposuction Still Reign Supreme?
ASPS President Dr. Alan Matarasso, M.D. cites the treatment’s versatility, efficiency, and effectiveness.
Finally, liposuction tends to be a one-time procedure. Accordingly, it provides significant slimming, contouring, and reshaping, without the need for repeated treatments. This advantage can make surgery especially appealing to some patients.
Nevertheless, the ASPS report did show that non-invasive fat reduction was on the rise in 2018.
Therefore, a comprehensive and customized approached to body contouring may be key to achieving optimal outcomes.
